Top Ten Recommended Halloween Reads by Kimberly Derting

So anyone who knows me, knows I love a good scare, which pretty much makes Halloween the BEST HOLIDAY EVER!  It also makes my reading list a little...let’s just say...twisted...

So putting those two things together, I came up with a list of some of my all-time-favorite scary reads just in time for All Hallows Eve.

Here goes:

THE SHINING, IT, MISERY, PET SEMETARY, or anything, really, by Stephen King. He is the undisputed master of horror. Undisputed.

THE FOREST OF HANDS AND TEETH by Carrie Ryan. I love me some zombies, and Carrie Ryan had me at her version of a red-vested, fast-moving zombie.

THE PASSAGE by Justin Cronin. I’m not sure whether these were vampires or zombies, or something in between, but be prepared for some effed-up dreams when you’re reading this one!

JURASSIC PARK by Michael Crichton. Really, Kim? Dinosaurs???  Trust me, this is one of the best edge-of-your-seat page-turners I’ve ever read. It’s nail-biting with a capital N!!!

GRAVEMINDER by Melissa Marr. It’s by Melissa Marr; need I say more???

THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS by Thomas Harris. Okay, you’ve probably seen the movie, but I’m telling you, the book is equally (if not more!) creeptastic. Two words: Skin suit.

VELVETEEN by Daniel Marks. I just added this new release to my horror shelf. It has body-invading ghosts, fly-swarms, an underground revolution, and a serial killer who gave me the creeps. Seriously. Awesome.

DEMON’S LEXICON by Sarah Rees Brennan. Demons, demons, demons! Oh, and kissing.

BEAUTIFUL CREATURES by Margaret Stohl and Kami Garcia. This one’s not so much scary as it is lush and gothic. It sets a great mood for a dark holiday!

And, on my Halloween To-Read List:

THE HUNT by Andrew Fukuda. Have I ever told you that I’m terrified of vampires? Well, I am. Terrified. Which, of course means I love reading vampire books!

I HUNT KILLERS by Barry Lyga. Grisly serial killer book? Yes, please!

TEN by Gretchen McNeil. Ten kids who are stranded on an island and then picked off one-by-one. This is right up my alley! Plus, I just found out that it’s set right in my own backyard in the San Juan Islands. Sweet.

Thanks so much for the fabulous list Kim!  I'm easily scared, so for me this is the books to 'stay away from!' list.  ;)  Actually, I LOVED Beautiful Creatures and Demon's Lexicon was fab as well.  I have The Forest of Hands and Teeth and maybe I'll pick that one up soon.

About The Body Finder:

Violet Ambrose is grappling with two major issues: Jay Heaton and her morbid secret ability. While the sixteen-year-old is confused by her new feelings for her best friend since childhood, she is more disturbed by her "power" to sense dead bodies—or at least those that have been murdered. Since she was a little girl, she has felt the echoes that the dead leave behind in the world... and the imprints that attach to their killers.

Violet has never considered her strange talent to be a gift; it mostly just led her to find the dead birds her cat had tired of playing with. But now that a serial killer has begun terrorizing her small town, and the echoes of the local girls he's claimed haunt her daily, she realizes she might be the only person who can stop him.

Despite his fierce protectiveness over her, Jay reluctantly agrees to help Violet on her quest to find the murderer—and Violet is unnerved to find herself hoping that Jay's intentions are much more than friendly. But even as she's falling intensely in love, Violet is getting closer and closer to discovering a killer... and becoming his prey herself.
